Alice Culbertson Murder | ||||||
|
Alice Culbertson was the second child of Adolph and Wilhemina Giesenhagen. Born in 1889, she married Fred Timpke in March, 1909. They had two children, Gladys, born in 1910, and Nettie, born in 1914. After Fred and Alice were divorced, Alice married Carl Culbertson on November 5, 1931. Carl was a well-respected farmer who lived north of Grand Island along the Old St. Paul Road. Five months after the wedding, Alice was murdered by a shotgun blast as she sat in her living room. The story, told through newspaper accounts, is fascinating. Grandma (Clara) Seim never talked about this very much. Rumors about Alice, Clara's older sister, caused upset and family divisions for many years. Aunt Lenora remembers some of the difficult times, and Lenora provided some of the clippings. The clippings themselves ( 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 ) are difficult to read, but I have included a transcript of the story. You will need Acrobat to read these. |
Newspaper Clippings (You may want to read the transcript above these pages. The clippings are a little difficult to see and read. These are large files and will take a long time to download) Transcript of the Newspaper Account

The Culbertson house about 15 years ago. The fatal gunshot was fired from the porch on the right side, through the door. The house was no longer there when I checked this summer. |

These are the best pictures I could find of Alice and Carl. These were scanned off of old copies of newspaper clippings. |
